The Electrical Industry Charter:

The Australian electrical industry is united in a desire to stamp out the unnecessary and growing threat posed by non-compliant product in Australia by asking "Does It Comply?" every time we do business.

The trade in non-compliant and counterfeit product is not a victimless crime, it hurts business and it has the potential to hurt or even kill people. By harnessing the whole industry's desire to remove this threat in Australia, the Does It Comply? campaign will tackle the following key issues:

Loss of life/property

Electrical products which do not comply with the relevant Australian Standards present a threat to property and to people's safety. Counterfeit or non-compliant product will often use cheaper materials and lack production controls making them more likely to turn out to be dangerous and cause fires or electrocution.

Damage to industry

There are numerous damaging consequences to industry from the trade in non-compliant product.

  • Trust - perhaps most importantly, is the potential to undermine the trust which has been developed at all levels within the supply chain in Australia. Industry must protect itself against the threat of non-compliant product, and to do that it must be heard and voice its concern and its zero tolerance approach to non-compliant or counterfeit product.
  • Brand and Reputation - the brand and reputation damage associated with any inadvertent use of non-compliant product, or by having counterfeit copies of a product sold, could be crippling for the companies involved. The cost burden on a reputable manufacturer to fight legal challenges associated with non-compliant counterfeit product, or on a contractor to replace product found to be non-complaint could be catastrophic.
  • Innovation - the increased trade in counterfeit or non-compliant product will contribute to a decline in expenditure on innovation as cheaper non-compliant alternatives or copies of reputable brands flood the market, reducing market share of reputable companies, and reducing the investment they are able to spend on product development.

The Commitment

All signatories to The Electrical Industry Charter agree to work cooperatively with each other and relevant bodies to lead the Does It Comply? campaign and promote the development of initiatives designed to counter the threat to the Australian electrical industry from counterfeit and non-compliant products. Signatories to the Charter commit to:

  • Ask "does it comply?" every time I do business
  • Work cooperatively with NECA, Voltimum and all invited partners to develop initiatives and promote the campaign
  • To respect the industry by promoting, selling or using only compliant and genuine product.
  • Report, or encourage the reporting, of examples of non-compliant product they encounter

All companies promoted as a partner to the Does It Comply? Campaign have agreed to this commitment.
